Inspirations

In our latest edition of Meet the Artist, we reconnect with the extraordinary Bree Merryn, one of the UK’s leading wildlife artists. Renowned for her ability to breathe life into her animal subjects, Bree’s artistic journey continues to thrive, and her passion for capturing the spirit of wildlife remains as strong as ever.

Bree has been busy with new projects, challenges, and exciting future plans, which she graciously shared with us during our conversation.

Expanding Her Artistic Spectrum

Since our last interview, Bree has been hard at work expanding her impressive wildlife portfolio. Among her latest works are new dog breeds, now a part of her ever-popular collection, as well as fresh additions to her beloved Bumble and Buddy series.

"I'm always busy with private commissions and new creations," Bree shared. "I’ve also been collaborating with several companies to create collections for product lines like candles, stationery, decorative plaques, and even crystal art kits." Bree’s creative reach continues to extend beyond the canvas, bringing her art to new audiences in exciting ways.

A New Medium, A New Passion

While watercolour, with its signature splashes, has long been Bree’s favoured medium, recent months have seen her embrace a new love: soft pastels. "Soft pastels have quickly become my new favourite medium," she explained. "They offer a new way to bring out the details of my subjects, and I’m really enjoying how they complement my style."

Bree has also explored a unique theme—painting animals in clothing, particularly military uniforms. "The challenge was capturing the expressions that reflect the pose while researching historical uniforms for inspiration," she said. This series, painted in acrylics against dark backgrounds, has been met with great enthusiasm, and Bree is excited to expand this imaginative body of work.

Creativity Without Boundaries

Bree’s creative journey is still shaped by the influence of her grandmother, who encouraged her from an early age. Now a grandmother herself, Bree delights in passing on this artistic freedom. "There’s no right or wrong in art," she advises young artists. "Experiment with different mediums until you find your own style."

Her six-year-old granddaughter is already showing a natural flair for art, and Bree loves the uninhibited creativity they share. "She has no boundaries or inhibitions, which is wonderful to see," Bree said with a smile.

Looking to the Future

As Bree looks to the future, she’s eager to explore new subjects and mediums. "I haven’t yet conquered charcoal, so that’s something I plan to focus on soon," she shared. She remains dedicated to expanding her portfolio of wildlife artwork and working closely with licensing partners to bring her art to new product lines.

Bree’s travels continue to be a source of inspiration, with hopes of returning to Africa next year. "Africa has always inspired me, but in the meantime, Yorkshire and Cornwall provide wonderful inspiration on a daily basis," she noted.

From her studio in Yorkshire to her travels abroad, Bree Merryn’s artistic journey is a heartfelt reflection of her love for animals and her drive to evolve as an artist. Her unique style and ever-growing portfolio are a testament to her dedication, with much more to come.
