Guide Dogs – The third ‘pupdate’ on Wynnie
Published date: 04 September 2024
Did you know? Most guide dogs are trained to walk on the left side of their handlers. This clever practice stems from the fact that most people are right-handed, allowing them to keep their dominant hand free. It's a small detail that makes a big difference in the daily lives of visually impaired individuals and their guide dogs.
Since we last introduced you to Wynnie, our adorable Golden Retriever and Labrador mix born on February 7, 2024, she's made incredible progress in her journey to become a guide dog. Today, we're thrilled to share an update on her development and the heartwarming bond she's forming with her Puppy Raiser, Yvonne.
Wynnie has settled into her new home brilliantly, tackling important milestones like toilet training and establishing a bedtime routine. True to her playful nature, she has quite the toy collection, with her teddy and a special chew toy becoming her clear favourites.
Yvonne has been introducing Wynnie to crucial training exercises, including the 'touch game'. This seemingly simple activity, where Wynnie touches her nose to Yvonne's hand for a treat, is actually laying the groundwork for an essential skill used by working guide dogs during free runs. It's wonderful to see Wynnie picking this up at such a young age!
Wynnie's unique personality continues to shine through. Yvonne describes her as having a cheerful nature that charms everyone she meets. One of Yvonne's favourite sights is watching Wynnie run around with her 'ears flapping' – a joyful image that perfectly captures this pup's enthusiasm for life.
When asked to describe Wynnie in three words, Yvonne chose "fun, cheeky, and clever". These traits beautifully sum up the essence of our little star who's already winning hearts left and right. It's remarkable to see how much Wynnie has grown and learned since that very first 'pawtrait' we shared with you. Below, you'll find Wynnie's report card, highlighting her progress and achievements so far!
As Wynnie progresses in her training, we'll continue to keep you updated on her journey. Your support through Calendar Club UK is making a real difference in Wynnie's path to becoming a guide dog, and we're deeply grateful for your contribution to this life-changing cause.
Stay tuned for more updates on Wynnie and our other guide dog puppies in training. Remember, Wynnie is the tenth puppy we've sponsored thanks to your generosity, and we couldn't be more proud of the impact we're making together.
